Advancing high-quality carbon offset markets via innovative solutions to well plugging.
Carbon Shield turns orphaned and abandoned wells — long-standing, overlooked methane emission sources — into lasting climate solutions. Our credits are independently verified and deliver transparent, permanent, and impactful results.
Hundreds of thousands of orphaned oil and gas wells across the United States represent a widespread and persistent source of methane emissions, with limited viable pathways for abatement.
Orphaned oil and gas wells are unplugged, inactive wells without a solvent operator or responsible party to address plugging liabilities. These wells can continue to emit methane after being shut in. Confirming whether these emissions are present and documenting them accurately is a foundational requirement for developing high-quality methane abatement projects.
Optical Gas Imaging (OGI) is one of the primary tools used to detect and visually confirm methane emissions from active and orphaned oil and gas wells. By confirming the presence of emissions and pinpointing their sources, OGI enables Carbon Shield to determine which wells are eligible for inclusion in carbon credit projects. Video documentation captured through OGI provides clear, auditable evidence of pre-plugging emissions and helps ensure our projects are built on accurate, verifiable data.
Grounded in the ACR’s orphan well methodology, Carbon Shield applies internal practices that demonstrate our commitment to high standards of safety, monitoring, and credit accounting:
A Denver-based team with decades of oil & gas engineering and field experience, having safely plugged hundreds of wells across diverse basins.
End-to-end carbon credit solutions that transform legacy wells into climate assets.

The ACR930 project involved the identification and quantification of methane emissions from two orphaned wells located in Adams County, Colorado, followed by their permanent plugging to eliminate fugitive emissions.
These wells were confirmed sources of uncontrolled, continuous methane releases into the atmosphere. Baseline measurements were first conducted prior to plugging and abandonment in accordance with ACR requirements and state regulations, and follow-up measurements verified that methane emissions had been effectively and permanently eliminated post-plugging.
